Starting from Fratelli Longo Refuge (2026 m) you rise quickly to the “del Diavolo” lake (2142 m). From here we continue on the left going up - high on the west lakeshore – passing along the hillside below the Pizzo di Cigola until to reach Cigola Pass (2486 m).

    Note

From Cigola Pass - scanning the valley of Ambria below - you can see the Zappello lake or, in its place, a dry plateau (it is most likely the case!). This is due to the fact that the lake is "seasonal": it is fed only by waters of the thaw or by rainwater. In fact, the Zappello lake has not an emissary: its waters flow from below, due to the permeable bottom. Only in the spring, usually, the lake receives more water than it loses from the bottom. So, in the absence of very snowy winters, the lake reaches its maximum in May, and then decreases until it disappears altogether from early summer until the following spring.
